Reporting to the Vice President for Advancement, this position is responsible for planning, directing, integrating and managing all aspects of the Illinois Wesleyan University engagement and annual giving efforts. The AVP will have regular contact with members of the University leadership team, Alumni Association Executive Board and other key alumni and friends.

Job Responsibilities:
The AVP will play a critical role in creating and leading cohesive strategies and outreach efforts to create and sustain commitment and engagement among the IWU alumni and friends. As a collaborative leader and team-builder the AVP will be responsible for developing, implementing and overseeing the IWU Engagement and Wesleyan Fund strategy to enhance the University’s connection to its alumni and external constituents, locally and nationally. In conjunction with University leadership and other key stakeholders, the AVP will be tasked with growing a program rooted in best practices in the field and utilize a market research based approach to segmentation and messaging. The AVP will supervise a staff of seven experienced individuals.

As an inspiring and motivating mentor to a group of energetic professionals, the AVP will build and sustain a strong team, impart knowledge, and provide guidance to existing staff, but will also utilize and cultivate their ideas to help shape the innovative programs of tomorrow.

Additional responsibilities will include but are not limited to: Alumni Executive Board relations and engagement; programming, events and reunions; leadership and staff development; and data acquisition and analysis. Underlying all work will be the responsibility for tying alumni engagement into the strategy and achievement of annual giving and broader IWU Advancement goals.

Minimum Requirements:

The successful candidate will have the capacity to accelerate growth in alumni and annual giving and be an innovative forward-thinking leader with exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with senior leadership staff, faculty, and alumni of all ages and demographics. S/he will be a compelling, charismatic leader who has the ability to move a team forward by inspiring and motivating people with creativity, energy and a sense of humor. As such, the AVP should not only possess strong communication skills but should also be able to create an environment that is conducive to open and direct communication with individuals of varying degrees of involvement with the University and its work. S/he should have the ability to think strategically, generate new ideas, plan, and set goals and objectives. Must possess a minimum of a bachelor's degree in a related field with 3-5 years of experience in development and/or alumni relations. Occasional travel is required.
