Basic Function:

Automotive Technician (75%):

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties related to vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair at an assigned campus location; maintain
service and repair records.

Custodian I (25%):

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform routine day or evening custodial activities at an assigned school campus or other assigned District facility; maintain buildings and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly and secure condition.

Representative Duties
Automotive Technician
Inspect, diagnose, and locate mechanical difficulties on automobiles, trucks, and a variety of diesel and gasoline powered maintenance and construction equipment.

Overhaul, repair, and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, and valves and construction equipment hydraulic systems.

Tune-up engines including replacing electrical and electronic parts and cleaning and adjusting carburetors.

Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, or oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment.

Repair and replace such components as generators, distributors, relays, lights and switches, repair emergency generator parts.

Pick up and deliver vehicles to designated areas; transport vehicles to outside vendors for specialized repair as required.

Service, repair and maintain electric carts and four-wheel all-terrain vehicles.

Operate a forklift to unload delivery trucks and to move heavy items.

Monitor and record fuel and waste oil levels in underground tanks; maintain tools, equipment and work shop area; maintain computerized inventory of parts.

Maintain inspection, maintenance and repair records.

Prepare smog certification on a variety of vehicles.

Assist in the ordering and purchasing of fuel, oil shop supplies, parts and equipment as required.

Perform a variety of routine maintenance and repair work related to building facilities as assigned.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Custodian I
Perform routine custodial activities at an assigned school campus or District facility during a day or evening shift; sweep, scrub, mop, wax and polish floors; vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices and other areas; spot clean and shampoo carpets.

Clean classrooms, lounges, offices and other facilities as assigned; empty waste receptacles; spot mop and shampoo spills; remove gum, debris and graffiti as needed.

Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and restroom facilities including sinks, toilets and urinals; replenish dispensers with towels, soap, toilet paper and other items; clean mirrors, tile and

Replace light bulbs and tubes; clean chalkboards and erasers; empty pencil sharpeners.

Dust and polish furniture, fixtures and woodwork; perform minor repairs to furniture as needed.

Lock and unlock doors and gates as appropriate; maintain security of assigned areas according to established guidelines; set and disengage alarms as appropriate.

Report safety, sanitary and fire hazards to appropriate authority; report need for maintenance repairs; respond to emergency custodial requests as needed.

Move and arrange furniture and equipment; prepare classrooms, gym and multi-purpose rooms for special events or meetings; set-up chairs, tables, bleachers and other furniture and equipment for special events or meetings; clean up furniture equipment and debris following these events.

Operate custodial equipment such as vacuums, mops, small hand and power tools, buffer/scrubber machines, blowers and other equipment.

Participate in the thorough cleaning and restoration of campus facilities during vacation periods as

Education and Experience:

Automotive Technician: Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above including specialized training in the maintenance and repair of gas, diesel and electric powered equipment and two years of journey-level experience performing automotive and equipment maintenance and repair duties.

Custodian I: Any combination equivalent to: at least six months related experience.

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate ASE Certification.
Satisfactory completion of pre-employment physical assessment.
Satisfactory completion of pre-employment drug testing.

Note: Degrees and credits must be from accredited institutions (Title V Section 53406). Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an evaluation service.

Knowledge and Abilities:


• Methods, practices, equipment, and tools used in the overhaul, repair, and adjustment of gas, diesel and electric powered equipment, and HVAC systems.
• Operation and care of internal combustion engines.
• Basic record keeping techniques.
• Basic arithmetic.
• Safe work practices.
*Proper methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in modern custodial work.
*Modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning floors, blackboards, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures.
*Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
*Requirements of maintaining District buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
*Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
*Proper lifting techniques.


• Use and care for tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles.
• Diagnose and service vehicles and mechanical equipment.
• Use a variety of tools and equipment with skill.
*Work independently with little direction.
• Understand and follow oral and written instruction.
*Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
*Perform routine custodial activities at an assigned school site or other District facility.
*Maintain District buildings and adjacent grounds in a clean, orderly and secure condition.
*Use cleaning materials and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
*Operate a variety of custodial equipment.
*Maintain tools and equipment in clean working order.
*Move and arrange furniture and equipment for meetings and special events.
*Observe and report safety hazards and need for maintenance and repair.
*Perform minor non-technical repairs.
*Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
*Meet schedules and time lines.
*Work cooperatively with others.

Salary Grade: 40.0 (75%)/ 31.5 (25%)
