Job Title: REGISTERED VETERINARY TECHNICIAN

Job description:  
The Contra Costa County Animal Services Department is seeking qualified individuals to establish an eligible employment list to be used to fill one full-time permanent Registered Veterinary Technician position.

Under general supervision, Registered Veterinary Technicians provide assistance to the licensed Veterinarians when assigned to the Animal Services Department/Spay Clinic, and when assigned to Animal Services shelter activities. The Registered Veterinary Technicians assist Veterinarians in identifying and treating sick and injured shelter animals. In addition, Registered Veterinary Technicians are required to perform a range of other paraprofessional and housekeeping duties associated with the operations of the clinic and shelter.

The employment list established as a result of this examination may remain in effect for twelve (12) months.



Typical Tasks:
Assignment at the Spay Clinic:
Assists in physical examinations of animals prior to surgery
Prepares the operating room, surgical instruments, medications and sedatives for use
Prepares animals for surgery
Administers anesthesia and assists Veterinarians during operations
Moves animals to a recovery location after surgery
Cleans the operating room and sterilizes instruments
Feeds and cares for animals before and after surgery
Receives and returns animals to the public
Administers vaccination shots to animals under Veterinarian supervision
Maintains proper inventory of medical and surgical supplies
Assists Veterinarians in preparing and maintaining a medical history on each animal in computerized database
Explains the purpose and functions of the County's Animal Spay Clinic program to the public in response to inquiries
Assists in opening and closing the clinic
Keeps the clinic clean and sanitary
Assists in the feeding, care and disposal of animals.
Assignments at a Shelter:
Assists in physical examinations of animals prior to diagnosis and treatment
Prepares the treatment room, medical equipment, medications and sedatives for use
Preps animals for treatment or minor surgery
Assists Veterinarians during veterinary procedures
Moves animals to and from kennels and treatment room
Cleans the treatment room and veterinary equipment
Provides treatment prescribed by Veterinarians to injured or sick animals
Administers vaccination and other shots to animals being treated under Veterinarian supervision
Feeds and cares for animals before and after treatments
Maintains proper inventory of medical and surgical supplies
Assists Veterinarians in preparing and maintaining a medical history on each animal in computerized database
Receives injured and sick animals brought to the shelters and makes a preliminary assessment of their condition for Veterinarian
Returns treated animals to their original or new owners
Explains the animal conditions and treatments to the prospective adoptive owners, new owners, and actual owners in response to inquiries
Assists in opening and closing the shelter
Keeps the treatment areas and kennels/cages clean and sanitary
Assists in the feeding, care and disposal of animals.
Assignment as a Lead:
Coordinates work assignments of other Registered Veterinary Technicians and Veterinary Assistants
Ensures sufficient coverage at Animal Services locations


Minimum Qualifications:
License: Candidates must possess and maintain throughout the duration of employment a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Out of State valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License will be accepted during the application process.

Certification: Candidates must possess and maintain throughout the duration of employment a valid certification as a Registered Veterinary Technician issued by the State of California Veterinary Medical Board.

Application Evaluation: Depending on the number of applications received, an Application Evaluation Board may be convened to evaluate and select the best-qualified candidates for invitation to the next phase of the examination.

Oral Interview: An oral interview will be conducted by a Qualifications Appraisal Board in Martinez, CA. The Board will evaluate candidates in job-related areas. Candidates must receive a rating of at least 70 from a majority of the Board members to be ranked on the employment list. (Weighted 100%)
The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.
