ABOUT TVHC and SBSL

Tiburcio Vasquez Health Center, Inc. is a premier provider of community-based healthcare in So. Alameda County. Our School Based/School Linked (SBSL) program brings the full myriad of support services to the High School population, connecting students to clinical, medical, mental health, and integrated support services and programs. We serve the health care needs of thousands of our student youth by offering professionally managed and youth appropriate health centers at Logan High School and Tennyson High School. Here, students receive comprehensive primary care services including well child exams, sports physicals, reproductive health counseling, mental health counseling, health education and after school programs.

HEALTH EDUCATOR

We have an opening for the position of Health Educator for the Tennyson School Based Health Center. The Health Educator provides services to the Tennyson High School Students and their families, provides health education, coordinates health education outreach, and is responsible for after school youth empowerment programs and the Student Advisory Board.

JOB DUTIES

Responsibilities include program planning and implementation, curriculum development, and evaluation of curriculum and programs. The Health Educator coordinates health education outreach to the student body, including collaboration with outside organizations, promotion of the School Based Health Center to students and faculty, and developing a peer outreach program, conducts case conferences with Tennyson School Based Health Center team members, program staff, and other service providers as needed. Other duties are to provide health education in family planning, STD prevention, substance abuse prevention, HIV/AIDS education, tobacco cessation, body image, nutrition, sexual orientation, and other areas as indicated. The Health Educator co-facilitates peer-education/peer-counseling and conflict mediation program. It is important that the Health Educator stays abreast of research and development regarding health education and mental health for youth and adolescents and produces and/or updates health education materials as needed to ensure current information and cultural/age appropriateness.
Skills:  
REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree, (Masters preferred or equivalent experience) in public health, counseling, psychology, social work, or related field. Must be culturally sensitive and demonstrate ability and enjoyment in working with ethnically diverse adolescent populations in a progressive, environment committed to social justice issues. Must be non-judgmental, highly ethical and able to maintain strict confidentiality. Understands principles of, and can implement, the peer leadership and youth empowerment model, violence prevention and conflict resolution strategies, pertaining to reducing racial bias, school based violence, and interpersonal student conficts. Understands issues particular to adolescent populations including adolescent development and health issues and principles of community health outreach and health promotion. The Health Educator will have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and ability to work independently and as a member of a team. Computer literate, prefer experience with Windows 95 or higher, Microsoft Word and Excel.


PREFERRED

Bilingual in English and one of the following: Spanish, Vietnamese, Farsi, Punjabi or Tagalog. Two or more years experience in the following: working with adolescent population, working with ethnically diverse populations adequate to demonstrate knowledge and sensitivity to issues of cultural differences, implementing peer leader programs. One or more years experience working in a school based or teen center setting, case management and counseling experience strongly preferred, and experience working with parents of adolescents.
