The UCSF Women’s Options Center provides safe, caring, and professional abortion services, abortion training, and family-planning research. Highly trained UCSF faculty provides these services with second-, third- and fourth-year residents. Medical students rotate through the clinic. The clinic accepts most insurance including Medi-Cal, and provides elective abortion, treatment for non-viable pregnancy as well as termination for medical or fetal indications.
We are currently looking to hire a Practice Assistant at 75% FTE (30 hours/week). The days and hours for this part-time position are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30am to 5:00pm, alternating Mondays or Fridays, with some flexibility. The Practice Assistant will be the first WOC contact, in person and on the phone, for patients who need an abortion or need treatment for miscarriage. S/he consistently projects a professional, approachable and courteous demeanor.
Under general supervision of the Medical Director and the Coordinator, and guided by the policies and procedures of Ambulatory Services of the UCSF Medical Center, the Practice Assistant assists in the delivery of care to patients in an ambulatory abortion practice. S/he performs activities in the following areas: clerical; registration and patient intake; financial eligibility, records and monitoring; medical assisting; and abortion and contraception education. S/he will perform assigned patient care and laboratory procedures in support of the telephone and house standards as adopted by the Medical Center.
Utilizing a computerized scheduling and registration system, this position provides telephone and in-person assistance to patients. Schedule, re-schedule, and track patient appointments. Register patients by collecting and inputting patient demographic information to create new patient records. Ensure completion of all necessary billing documentation. Select appropriate insurance plans and enter information for visit to ensure proper reimbursement. Obtain and document insurance authorizations for billing purposes. |

Qualifications: -High school graduation or GED and two years of related administrative/clerical experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. -Experience working in a medical environment. -Current knowledge of hormonal and non-hormonal birth control methods. -Demonstrated commitment to women’s health issues, reproductive choice, and abortion access. -Excellent people skills. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with a variety of different people -- ranging from medically unsophisticated patients to highly trained medical specialists -- both over the telephone and directly. -Able to complete multiple tasks at the same time and work in a high stress environment. -Excellent follow-through and attention to detail to ensure that quality services are delivered -Able to sit at a computer terminal with telephone headphones for extended periods of time. -Requires successful completion of registration training and IDX training, including a passing score on the IDX test. -Microsoft office -- Word, Excel, Outlook. Access experience helpful. -Basic computer and keyboard skills. -Basic math skills.
Preferred Qualifications: -Abortion, pregnancy options, and/or birth control counseling experience. Previous experience working in an abortion clinic. -Bilingual or multi-lingual capability (Spanish, Cantonese, Russian) -Previous reception/medical office work. -Knowledge of medical terminology. -Experience with insurance verification, medical record data abstraction, or patient financial service. -Understanding of health insurance coding and billing. -College degree in social/health science or equivalent experience. -Experience with procedures requiring sterile technique. Medical assistant certificate. -IDX, STOR, PACE/SCHED computer systems. .
